Hitoshi Motomura aimed to create a chair that not only had a simple and beautiful form but also offered high functionality. The design incorporates classic elements in a contemporary and minimalistic way, resulting in a chair that is both timeless and modern.
One of the unique features of Mode is its long frame that extends up to the arms, providing light support to the compact shell. This design choice gives the chair a sense of floating and adds visual interest. Additionally, the chair showcases a sharp material shift between the hard wood panels on the outside of the shell and the soft fabric on the inside. This contrast creates a contemporary look and gives the chair two different faces, depending on the viewing angle.
Mode stands out not only for its design but also for its realization technology. The chair weighs only 11 kg and is 52 cm wide, making it incredibly compact for an armshell chair. The 2mm-thick aluminum shell is a new material made of 6H-hard wood grain wave-polished aluminum. This special polishing technique changes the color and depth of the aluminum, creating a unique visual effect. The lightweight aluminum panel allows for the bending of corners, resulting in a beautiful shell shape that is lightweight, compact, and strong.
The shape of the shell is achieved using state-of-the-art laser cutting and bending technology, while the inner cushion seat is meticulously crafted by skilled chair craftsmen. This fusion of machine technology and craftsmanship results in a compact and high-quality armchair.
Mode's specifications include a width of 520mm, height of 720mm, depth of 500mm, and a weight of 11kg. The chair features fabric upholstery on hard urethane, an outer wood grain pattern aluminum panel, and stainless steel legs.
Interacting with Mode is effortless. The chair can be easily pulled using the frame or used to support oneself while standing up with the arms. The frame's antiqued hair finish is scratch-resistant, and the mirrored finish and surface transition create an illusion of length and slimness. The shell panel and inner cushions are also removable, allowing for customization and versatility.
The design process for Mode began in 2000, with the idea for the base. It was redesigned in 2020, and a prototype was created in 2021. Hitoshi Motomura's research as an interior designer in Tokyo, Japan, played a significant role in the development of this chair. The compact yet luxurious design solves the challenges of space efficiency, particularly in urban areas and restaurant design.
Mode has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Mode's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world have earned it this esteemed accolade.
Mode, with its simple and contemporary form and classical feel, is a testament to Hitoshi Motomura's design prowess. Its compact size and elegant design make it a versatile and comfortable armchair that can enhance any space.
